I began making drums in the spring of 1994. At the time I was attending
classes at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta as a second year
ceramics major. Seriously concerned with the production of “functional
ceramics”, and yet not wanting to be caught into making plates and bowls, I
turned to the crafting of musical instruments and began to teach myself how to
make ceramic drums. Over the past five years since then I have continued to
research instruments, developing new stretching techniques, and hosting
stretching workshops.
In May 1995, I was invited to speak at the “International Ceramics”
conference, hosted by Leisure Learning Services, a department of the Calgary
Board of Education, and the Alberta Potters Association. My lecture, entitled
“An Introduction to the Ceramic Drum”, was an interactive demonstration
which allowed participants to familiarize themselves with the many aspects of
the ceramic drum. The Lecture was presented to fifty people, and was
approximately two hours long.
