Artist Statement

I craft objects for the sheer joy and sense of wonderment I get from making them. I desire to create works that connect with the viewer, evoking an emotional response.

This “floral/bark” series initially sprang from a decision to depart from my usual method of working which is very structured and pre-planned. I love the responsiveness and malleability of clay and wanted to more fully exploit these qualities. I sought to work more intuitively, without inhibition, self-criticism and censorship, to create objects without preconceived notions beyond concept.

The basis of this work is contrast. The juxtaposition of a light, graceful, ethereal “floral” element and a heavy, grounded “bark” base. I am intrigued by the interplay between line, colour, space, texture and light. I am particularly interested in the interaction of the viewer, light and the three dimensionality of the object. How each step that the viewer takes reveals subtle nuances, changing their relationship to, and perception of, the work.

There are several ideas that I want to investigate as I continue to develop this concept. Can I increase the dynamic tension between the two elements by utilizing the inherent translucency of porcelain clay? Will scale affect the concept? And finally, light. By incorporating internal and/or external lighting can I set off greater differentiation between contrasting elements?

By exploring these challenges I hope to produce a body of work that will resonate with the viewer, now and in the future.
