A conference by Nathalie Dietschy and an encounter with photographer Bernard Garo: Photography Confronting the Disappearance of Glaciers

17 March 2026

Millennium Gallery is pleased to invite you to a conference by Nathalie Dietschy,
on  March 17, 2026, at 6:30 pm at Millennium Gallery, on the theme:

Photography in the Face of Disappearing Glaciers

Alpine glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, and nearly 70% of Switzerland’s glacial mass could disappear by the end of the century. Protected by thermal covers to slow their melting, they are already reshaping the landscape—at once fascinating and deeply unsettling.

How does photography bear witness to this transformation?
What do these images reveal about our relationship to time, nature, and the urgency of the climate crisis?

Associate Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Lausanne, and a specialist in landscape and ecology, Nathalie Dietschy will offer a sensitive and insightful reading of these transformations through the history and contemporary practice of photography.
Author of Alpine Glaciers Under Covers: A Photographic History (Infolio, 2025), she explores the power of images in the face of environmental change.

The event will also highlight the artistic commitment of photographer Bernard Garo, whose work has explored alpine materiality and the disappearance of glaciers for several years.
Awarded the Grand Prize Artivist at the Venice Lion for his film Crevasse, he has presented his performative films at numerous international festivals.

A conversation between the speaker and the artist, followed by a discussion with the audience, will extend the reflection, before a convivial cocktail reception.

We look forward to welcoming you.
